Breaking: South African Boxer Simiso Buthelezi Dies in Brain Injury
Simiso Buthelezi died Tuesday from internal bleeding due to a brain injury during Sunday's WBF All Africa title match at the Starline Boxing promotional event in Durban, South Africa.
The South African boxing regulator (BSA) announced the news on Wednesday in a joint statement with the boxer's family.
Butreji was in an artificial coma before he died. He was 24 years old.
The video of Butreji's last boxing match got a lot of attention when it went viral due to its terrifying and unusual nature. After knocking down his opponent and almost going through the rope, Butreji was confused, shaking violently in the air and directing his attention to the corner post. It was a shocking moment of turmoil for everyone involved and the match was abandoned by the referee.
He led the fight before the unfortunate incident happened. To be honest, I can't explain what happened. It was embarrassing, but there was nothing wrong with his condition in his training and preparation for the game. It was a good nickname before the battle.
The BSA added that an independent health checkup of the injury would be held next time, after which the general public would be notified of the results.
